We endeavour to be transparent with our fees

We will always provide an estimate where possible ahead of procedures and investigations and keep you updated if treatment is likely to exceed the estimate.

Our veterinary team will discuss treatment and cost options with you for your pet, so to as to provide the best possible care within the scope of financial constraints.

Veterinary Consultations

At Mayne Vets we pride ourselves on being the only clinic in Colchester to offer our clients 20 minute consultations. We really value spending more time with our clients to discuss their concerns and most importantly, our patients to facilitate time for a full clinical assessment. These consultations predominantly happen in the clinic, along with a physical clinical exam, but can also take place over a phone or video call if appropriate, reducing the stress of bringing your pet to the clinic and the carbon footprint of the journey.

We are a membership only clinic at Mayne Vets, so the cost for all consultations is covered by our Pet Health Club. We are happy to see any patient in an emergency regardless of whether they are a member or not. If you are not a member of our Pet Health Club, there is a consult charge of £68 for every consult. For those signing up to our Pet Health Club, your first consultation is chargeable but will you will receive a £15 discount.

Please remember that our consults last an average of 20 minutes, some may be shorter and some may be longer; and that a consultation starts 2-5 minutes before you enter the room as the vet reads through all relevant clinical history, and ends 3-5 minutes after you have left the room as the vet records the relevant information from the consult and dispenses any medication if needed.

Currently we do not have a Pet Health Club option for rabbits or small mammals so these consultations are chargeable at £68.

Nurse Consultations

At Mayne Veterinary Clinic we have a wonderful team of highly qualified, registered veterinary nurses. Our nurses have a vital role in providing the best possible care for you and your pet. This can be “behind the scenes” monitoring anaesthetics, assisting with surgery, or caring for our in-patients; but also it can be in the consult room. Our nurse consultations are also 20 minutes, allowing time where they can assist with on-going treatment, take blood samples or help owners improve the health and well-being of their pets in assisting with weight loss, arthritis and confidence clinics. If you ever have any concerns regarding the health and lifestyle of your pet, our registered veterinary nurses are always happy to discuss these with you.

As with veterinary consultations, all nurse consultations are fully covered under our Pet Health Club. If you are not a member of the Pet Health Club nurse there is a consult charge of £34 for every nurse consult, or they are available in “bundles” to help reduce costs for on-going care if needed.

Annual Health Check and Vaccination

We recommend that all pets receive an annual health check to help ensure they are as fit and healthy as can be. Along side these health checks we recommend annual vaccination for dogs, cats and rabbits. At Mayne Vets we rotate our dog and cat vaccination schedule on a three-year basis to ensure our pets only receive the vaccines they need on a yearly basis. We also offer “titre testing” for dogs if clients would prefer to test rather than vaccinate their pet. More information on titre testing can be found here.

The cost of all dog and cat vaccinations are covered under the Pet Health Club. If you are not a member of the Pet Health Club, there is a charge for all vaccination consults, please see the pricing information below. All our vaccination consultations include time to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your pet as well as time to perform a full clinical examination.

Written Prescriptions

We are always happy to provide a written prescriptions to enable owners to purchase medications online upon request.  For those pets receiving long-term medication, it may be cheaper for you to source this online via a written prescription, although we advise owners to check that online pharmacies are based in the UK and registered with the VMD.  Clients wishing to avoid benefiting veterinary corporates may also want to check what company owns the pharmacy they are purchasing from, some of the largest UK veterinary pharmacies are owned by corporate clinics.  Some clients will understandably query why medication can be sourced online cheaper then what it can be purchased from us. Feel free to read our FAQs about buying medication online, versus from your veterinary practice for more information here. There are various reasons for this and we welcome the outcome of the CMA investigation later in 2025.

Written prescriptions provided by the NHS are limited to provide one month’s worth of medication at a time.  There are very valid reasons for this including the stability in supply of medication, reducing wastage of unneeded medication and allowing for adjustment of dosages as the disease process changes.  At Mayne Vets we have adapted a similar policy but extended the period in many cases.  We are happy to prescribe up to a years’ worth of preventative parasite treatment to healthy patients (having discussed the individual parasite risk of the patient with the owner);  two months’ worth of medication for treatment of disease; but we are legally limited to prescribing one month worth of medication if the drug is a “controlled drug”.  This policy is consistent whether you purchase the medication directly from us or request a written prescription.

There is a charge per drug for every written prescription provided and is currently £22.50.  If you would like a written prescription, please request one from your vet.  You can then order your medication online and we will send the prescription directly to the pharmacy for you.
